The Archival Alchemy Laboratory℠, opened by founder Joyce LeeAnn, gathers archival researchers to explore her multidimensional process while investigating transformative methods that live at the intersection of art and archiving.
Activating the Archival Alchemy Laboratory!
My work strives to generate medicine that could support the healing and transformation of myself, my people, and others on our journeys toward liberation. Indivisible as artist and archivist, I bring my whole self into all of my work. I have found that whether I am leading an intergenerational workshop with other Black folx or lecturing in a diverse college classroom, my personal process of transformation can be a catalyst for your healing journey.
As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and other points of grief and stress, it is important to document our individual stories. Archival research can be utilized for self mastery and preservation. I’m driven by the process of letting the past inform the present in order to transmute the future. Feeling all of our feelings while alchemizing fear and stuckness into intentional stillness. Into rest. Into joy. Into momentum forward.
Through my artistic projects, I am creating an archive of everything that I have conquered and am overcoming. I began this work as a young girl, and as an act of decolonization I center my innate methods. Activating the Archival Alchemy Laboratory is your invitation to an intimate journey where I’ll preview my offerings! Eventually, I will be seeking archival researchers to virtually join this space to give and receive support while we investigate and explore the transformative potentiality that lives at the intersection of art and archiving.
I. Alchemizing Space™
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, I have transformed my bedroom into an intentional space that could hold all of my multitudes. It has become a tangible representation of my work. I’ll begin this series with a spirited tour of the Archival Alchemy Laboratory where I’ll interweave storytelling about my vintage and historic treasures while introducing my approaches to transmutation, organizing, and archiving.
II. Archival Texts™
Archival texts are like organisms where experiences become living and breathing things that we can preserve and return to when desired or needed. They revolt against the fleeting nature of memory — turning intangibles into documents. This Element of the lab will be part lecture of my exploration of this concept and part literary performance of excerpts from my archival text, somethymes grief goes for a walk.
III. Archival Flesh™
Archival Flesh™ is my approach to the concept of embodying archives, which is a conceptual framework that describes the memories and records we carry genetically, spiritually, and physically in our blood and bones. This Element of the lab will be part lecture of my exploration of this concept and part performance of excerpts from my current work in progress.
IV. Archivist After Hours™
As an ecdysiast, I utilize burlesque as a space for reclamation, and to assert agency over the expression of my body. I am known for my seductive slow burns, moving fan dancing, and captivating a room with my stillness and glamorous presence. During this Element of the lab there will be a live enchanting performance, some archival footage of my burlesque journey, and – my personal favorite – uninhibited shenanigans!
